Pioneer
Crossing Park, Shawnee’s newest park, is located
at the gateway to Shawnee at Shawnee Mission Parkway and
Melrose, just west of I-35. The park celebrates the thousands
of pioneers who came through Shawnee in the 1800's as they
traveled the Sante Fe Trail. It features works by local
artist Charles Goslin including an original painting of
a wagon train that has been recreated in a life-size three
dimensional brick wall mural. His sculpture of Dick Williams,
wagon master, has been recreated in native limestone and
bronze. At it's peak, the city saw 600 wagons per week.
Interpretive text and photo panels convey Shawnee’s
Trail stories.
